Airport Road, Dhaka

Airport Road, Dhaka or Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway (also called Tongi Diversion Road) is a 8-lane expressway in Dhaka, that connects Dhaka city, with the Shahjalal International Airport.[1] It is also the main artery that connects Dhaka with the northern suburb of Uttara, and the only road that connects Dhaka with Northern Districts of Bangladesh and vice versa.[2] It is clogged with heavy traffic for the whole day; it expericences heavy traffic congestion in Kuril-Biswa Road Intersection; thanks to flyovers and ramps being built, the smooth movement of traffic will be ensured.[3]

Facilities

It is was made as a high-speed expressway to facilitate connection of the airport with Dhaka. The 8 lane expressway (4 on each side) features bright street lights, monuments, fountains and beautiful structures.[4] It is one of the best maintained road in Bangladesh, with wide-properly painted lanes,[5] a divider; however it doesn't have a shoulder for emergency and breakdown. It has a impractical speed limit of 40 Km/h, since traffic enforcement is very poor in the road, that's why it experiences many accidents due to speeding and reckless driving, it is also a infamous venue of street racing. To enforce law, the traffic police have set up red light camera and Traffic enforcement camera to monitor speed and traffic enforcement, but the outcome is controversial and unsatisfactory; no fines have been booked to date.
